Free Accounting Sales Tax Codes provide a classification for identifying whether a transaction is taxable or non-taxable (the two default tax codes
provided by Free Accounting). This list is available if you
configured your business to collect sales tax. If you only collect tax for one taxing authority, you don't have to add another tax code
item. If you collect tax for multiple authorities, enter a code for that tax, using a three-letter abbreviation.
To view this list select Lists / Sales Tax Codes from the Free Accounting Main Menu or press
on the Commands Panel and select Sales Tax Codes in the Navigation Pane.
Take the following steps to add a sales tax code into the Free Accounting application:
- Select Lists / Sales Tax Codes.
- Right click in the Preview Pane and select Add.
- Enter the name of the new code, using up to three characters. You can use an abbreviation for the city, country, or state for this
code.
- Enter a description to make it easier to identify the code. After saving, this information can be edited by right clicking in the Preview Pane and
selecting Edit or just by double clicking on the line.
- Select Is Taxable checkbox if you are entering a code to track taxable sales for this tax authority.
- Remain this box unchecked if you are entering a code to track non-taxable sales for this tax authority.
- Check / uncheck the Active check box to make the new sales tax code active / inactive in the list.
- Press the Ok button if you've finished adding tax codes.

Create a taxable and non-taxable code for each taxing authority, so you can identify the non-taxable sales in addition to the taxable sales.
(Most authorities require reports that provide both totals.)
In addition, if you have customers who are tax-exempts, and the taxing authority requires you to report those transactions separately,
create a tax code for that case.
Click the View Edit History button to see the changes made to the current sales tax code in the Free Accounting application.
See the Free Accounting Right Click Function window for the information about the right click function of the Sales Tax Code List window.
Use Search function to find some definite record.
